Medeco Deadbolt Installation: The New York Owner’s Guide

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco deadbolts fall into three series you’re likely to encounter in New York residential buildings. The Maxum 11*500 line is the single-cylinder grade 1 deadbolt with a thumb turn inside - this is what we install most often in Brooklyn brownstones and Queens frame houses. The 11*600 series adds the captive thumb turn required by some co-op alteration agreements on the Upper East Side and in Riverdale. The rim cylinder variants, marked RC on the cylinder face, thread into surface-mounted housings common in pre-war buildings off the Grand Concourse and in Washington Heights.

Identification is straightforward once you know where to look. The model number is stamped on the edge of the cylinder, visible when the door is open and the bolt is extended. The backset - the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder - is either 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ in nearly every New York door we’ve opened. Measure it. Medeco does not offer adjustable backsets; ordering the wrong one means a second trip and a second charge. We carry both on the truck.

OEM Medeco cylinders use the original angled key-pin sidebar mechanism. Aftermarket cylinders marketed as “Medeco-compatible” exist, but we do not install them. The keyway tolerance is too tight, and we’ve seen aftermarket cylinders jam when New York humidity swells the door frame by even 1/16″. Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key catches or hangs at the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position. This usually means the sidebar pins are wearing unevenly. Medeco’s angled pins are cut on three axes, and once the angles round off, the sidebar no longer drops cleanly into the slot. The cylinder will still operate - until it doesn’t.
• Thumb turn spins freely without throwing the bolt. The tailpiece has sheared or the cam inside the bolt housing has cracked. In New York’s older buildings, we’ve found this happens when tenants force the thumb turn against a warped door that presses the bolt against the strike plate.
• Bolt extends only partially or requires shoulder pressure on the door. The door has settled in its frame, or the strike plate has shifted. In Park Slope and Astoria, we see this after winter: moisture gets into the frame, freezes, and the wood compresses slightly. The bolt path is now misaligned.
• Key works in warm weather but sticks below 30 degrees. The lubricant inside the cylinder has gummed with dust and oxidized. Medeco cylinders are tight-tolerance by design; any drag from degraded lubricant becomes a failure point. Do not spray WD-40 into it - the residue attracts more particulate.
• Door rattles in the frame even when locked. The strike plate screws have backed out, or the plate itself has elongated from bolt impact. This is a security gap, not a nuisance. A credit card or thin pry bar can compress the bolt against a loose strike.

The range depends on three factors we assess before quoting: door material (solid wood vs. metal-clad vs. hollow-core with a wood block), whether the existing bore is standard 2-1/8″ or needs enlarging, and whether the strike requires relocation or a mortise box. DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing you can safely check yourself: the strike plate alignment. Close the door, mark where the bolt meets the jamb, and see if the bolt hole is centered. If it’s off by more than 1/8″, the door has shifted and the bolt is scraping - this will destroy any cylinder eventually.

What you should not attempt: removing a Medeco cylinder without the control key. The cylinder is held by a retaining pin that requires a specific key cut to release. Forcing it with a screwdriver or drill will destroy the housing and possibly the door. We’ve replaced doors in Inwood and Flatbush where a DIY removal went wrong and the bore was wallowed out beyond repair.

Rekeying a Medeco cylinder yourself is not practical. The sidebar mechanism requires factory pinning kits and a key gauge most locksmiths don’t even stock. If you need the cylinder keyed to a new combination, that’s a bench job with a written key control record - part of what we deliver.
