Sargent Car Key Cutting: The New York Owner’s Guide

Sargent car key cutting in New York typically runs $45-$85 per key for standard brass blanks and $75-$140 for high-security transponder or sidewinder cuts, with same-day service at your location or in our shop. We stock Sargent-compatible key blanks for the 6800, 7800, and 8200 series levers and deadbolts, plus the older 6-pin and 7-pin cylinders still common in pre-war buildings across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Most owners discover a problem when their key starts catching in the entrance door of their co-op off Central Park West or their Sargent mortise lock at a SoHo loft quits turning smoothly - the cut tolerances have drifted, or the original key was hand-filed decades ago and no longer matches the factory bitting.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent key cutting covers three distinct eras of hardware. The 6-line (6300, 6400) and 7-line (7300, 7400) cylinders use .109″ root depth spacing with a .015″ increment, which differs from Schlage’s .005″ - a compatibility gotcha that sends many New York locksmiths reaching for the wrong blank. The 10-line and 8200 series levers, standard in commercial buildings from the Financial District to Long Island City, run on Sargent’s LA-LC keyway family with a deeper .125″ root. The 4800/4900 small format interchangeable core (SFIC) uses a completely different blank, the Sargent 6270, which we stock in both brass and nickel silver.

We cut to factory code from the stamping on the cylinder face or from a working key measured on a HPC Blitz. For buildings where the original bitting card is lost - common in 1920s-era apartment houses in Washington Heights - we decode the pins directly. Aftermarket equivalents from Ilco and Jet work fine for standard brass; for high-security Sargent Signature cylinders with the sidebar, we use OEM blanks only. The sidebar blank costs more, but a third-party cut will void the cylinder warranty and often jams the secondary locking mechanism.

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing
  • The key hangs at the 3 o’clock position. This usually means the root depth on one or more cuts has worn shallow from repeated use, or the original cut was off-spec. In New York’s older buildings, we see this on entrance doors with 40+ years of daily cycling.
  • You need to jiggle the key to find the shear line. The bitting peaks have rounded over, or the spacing between cuts has drifted from a hand-filed duplicate. A precision-cut replacement from code fixes this permanently.
  • The key works in one direction but not the other. Sargent cylinders have bidirectional pins, but a poorly cut duplicate often clears the top pins while binding the bottom set. This happens frequently with hardware-store copies made on automatic machines not calibrated for Sargent spacing.
  • The lock worked fine until winter. Brass keys contract in cold weather; a cut already at tolerance minimum will jam when temperatures drop below 20°F, which we see regularly during January cold snaps in New York.
  • Your duplicate no longer matches the original. Each generation of hand-copying drifts further from factory spec. By the third duplicate, you’re often cutting to a ghost pattern that barely clears the pin stack.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Standard Sargent key cutting in New York runs $45-$65 for a single brass key cut to code, including the blank. High-security Signature keys with sidebar milling run $95-$140 due to OEM blank cost and the secondary cut operation. If we decode from a disassembled cylinder rather than a code card, add $35-$50 for labor.

Every cut includes verification on a Sargent factory spec gauge before we hand it over. We quote the full price on the phone - Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. No dispatch fee, no “service call” surcharge added at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the cut: if the key doesn’t operate smoothly, we recut or refund. Documented photo record included.

You can verify the keyway yourself: look for “SARGENT” stamped on the bow and a letter code (LA, LB, LC, or 6270 for SFIC) that tells you the blank family. A flashlight and a magnifier will show if the cuts look rounded or uneven. What you cannot safely do is decode a cylinder or cut to spec without a key machine calibrated to Sargent’s root depth and spacing - .015″ increments demand .005″ machine accuracy, and a hand file won’t get there.

For high-security cylinders with sidebars or active elements, disassembly risks spring launch and pin loss. We’ve found pins scattered across entry vestibules in Park Slope and the Upper East Side from owners who opened the cylinder to “see what was inside.” Name’s on the van. That’s the whole pitch. Call (551) 214-0800 and we’ll quote the exact cut before we dispatch.
