Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Identification starts with the key. Protec2 keys have a rounded, almost paddle-shaped bow with the Abloy logo in relief. Sento keys are flatter, with a squared shoulder. If the cylinder face is stamped “Abloy Finland” with a date code, you’ve got an older CY series that needs different mounting hardware than current production. • Strike plate rattles or the bolt sits low in the keeper. Building settlement shifts door frames, especially in Upper West Side co-ops with 100-year-old timber. The bolt still throws, but it misses the strike center and wears the plate edge until the latch barely catches.
• Key turns smoothly but bolt doesn’t move. The cam, a small brass piece inside the cylinder housing, has sheared or the set screw has backed out. This is a full-cylinder failure, not a lubrication issue. Continuing to force the key will snap it.
• Visible corrosion on the cylinder face or bolt. Salt air from waterfront buildings in Battery Park City or Far Rockaway attacks the finish, then the metal beneath. Once pitting starts, the precision tolerances that make Abloy pick-resistant are compromised.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check three things before calling. Verify the key number stamped on the bow matches the cylinder registration card. Test whether the bolt moves freely with the thumbturn; if it does but the key doesn’t drive it, the cylinder has failed internally.

Where DIY goes wrong: Abloy cylinders are not generic. The disc mechanism requires specific cam profiles for deadbolt function versus lever function. Install the wrong cam and the key turns freely without throwing the bolt, or worse, the cylinder jams mid-rotation with the bolt extended and the door unsecured.
