- SmartKey (980/985): Rekeyable without disassembly. The Kwikset SmartKey tool allows instant code changes, but the sidebar mechanism is sensitive to forced-key turning. We’ve replaced dozens in Upper West Side prewar buildings where tenants forced the key against swollen summer wood.
OEM Kwikset cylinders carry the “KW1” keyway. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents by Ilco and Baldwin that match the Kwikset keyway and meet ANSI Grade 2 standards. To identify your model: remove the interior thumb turn and check the stamped code on the mounting plate. “660” or “998” will be visible. If the plate reads “SMARTKEY” or shows a small slot beside the keyway, you’ve got the rekeyable series.

Signs Your Kwikset Deadbolt Is Failing
- The thumb turn spins freely. The tailpiece connecting the interior turn to the bolt mechanism has sheared or the cam has stripped. This happens when tenants force the turn against a misaligned strike plate. The bolt itself may be intact, but the linkage is done.
- The key sticks at the 10 or 2 o’clock position. Pin chamber wear or debris in the keyway. In New York’s humid summers and dry radiator winters, internal lubricants migrate and dust settles. Graphite helps briefly; chamber wear means replacement.
- The bolt throws only halfway. Door frame settlement has shifted the strike plate, or the bolt’s internal cam is worn. We see this constantly in brownstone renovations where the frame was shimmed poorly and has sagged over three winters.
- The exterior cylinder pulls forward when you turn the key. The mounting screws have stripped the door’s wood, or the cylinder retaining ring has cracked. On hollow metal doors common in Midtown conversions, the thin face material doesn’t hold torque.
- SmartKey rekeying fails or the key works intermittently. The sidebar fingers have fatigued or the cradle was damaged during a forced rekey attempt. SmartKey is convenient but not forgiving of user error; replacement is usually the fix.

What you can safely check: verify the door thickness (1-3/8 or 1-3/4 inches), measure backset from door edge to keyhole center, and confirm the strike plate isn’t simply loose. Tightening two screws sometimes restores function.
Where DIY goes wrong: Kwikset deadbolts require precise hole alignment. A 1/8-inch misalignment between the cross bore and the edge bore binds the bolt and strips the tailpiece within months. New York’s prewar doors often have irregular mortises, multiple layers of paint, or concealed metal plates from prior hardware.
