Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco master key systems in New York buildings usually fall into three series: Biaxial (the 20+ year workhorse, still common in pre-2015 installations), M3 (the current ANSI Grade 1 standard with slider technology), and X4 (the interactive element system found in newer commercial cores). The part you need depends on the keyway stamped on your key bow and the cylinder housing already mortised into your door.

Check the key head for “M3,” “Biaxial,” or “X4″ marking. No marking usually means Biaxial. The cylinder face diameter matters too: Biaxial and M3 share a standard 1.125” mortise housing, but X4 requires a specific cam and tailpiece geometry that does not retrofit into older Biaxial prep without machining. We’ve found this mismatch in at least a dozen Midtown office conversions where a previous installer assumed interchangeability.

We stock OEM Medeco cylinders and factory-authorized key blanks. Aftermarket cylinders exist for Biaxial, but we do not install them in master key applications. • Cylinder binds or requires jiggling in cold weather. The lubricant has gummed with dust, or the sidebar springs have weakened. New York’s freeze-thaw cycles push moisture into cylinders; we’ve opened units in January where the original installer used graphite that turned to paste after five winters.
• Key inserts but won’t rotate to the full 90 or 180 degrees. A bottom pin has cracked or the sidebar is jammed with debris. Medeco pins are hardened steel with angled cuts; they don’t deform gradually like brass pins in standard cylinders. When they fail, they fail suddenly.
• Grand master works, but sub-masters are inconsistent. The master wafer or chamber spacing has drifted, usually from forced key rotation or attempted picking. High-security cylinders transmit torque differently than standard locks; forcing a stuck key can oval the pin chambers enough to scramble the master keying matrix.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for Medeco master key cylinder replacement. These are not standard pin-tumbler locks. The sidebar mechanism is under spring tension, the angle-cut pins require a specialized decoder to set correctly, and a master key system adds combinatorial complexity that makes trial-and-error reassembly a security risk.
