Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent’s product line breaks into three families you’ll find across New York buildings, and the rekeying approach differs for each. The 6200/6300 series cylindrical locks, common in pre-war Bronx walk-ups and Midtown office retrofits, use standard Schlage-compatible keyways (SC1 or SC4) and rekey with a standard .115 pin kit. The 6500 line and the newer 11-line heavy-duty cylinders require Sargent-specific LA or LB keyways and a .108 diameter pin set, which most hardware stores don’t stock. The 4800/4900 small-format interchangeable cores (SFIC) are a different animal entirely; they need a control key to remove the core, and the pinning follows Best/Falcon conventions, not Sargent’s standard depths.

To identify what you have, check the face of the cylinder for a stamped model number, or look at the key bow for the Sargent diamond logo and a keyway code. If the cylinder has a figure-eight shaped housing and a small hole on the side, it’s SFIC. Signs Your Sargent Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• Key sticks or requires jiggling at certain angles. This usually means worn driver pins or a build-up of metal dust in the pin chambers. In New York’s older buildings, decades of key duplication with worn blanks gradually reams out the plug, so the pin stack no longer aligns cleanly at the shear line.
• The key turns but the latch doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam connecting the cylinder to the latch mechanism has slipped or cracked. On Sargent 6200 series locks, the zinc die-cast tailpiece is the weak point; we’ve replaced dozens in Crown Heights and Washington Heights where the metal fatigued after fifteen years of daily use.
• Different keys operate the same lock, or your key works a neighbor’s door. This is keyway drift from excessive wear, or a master key system that was poorly pinned during a previous rekey. In master-keyed Sargent systems, one mis-pinned chamber can create incidental cross-keying, which is a security gap, not just a nuisance.
• The key won’t insert fully or feels gritty. Foreign material in the keyway, or a bent lower pin from forced entry attempts. New York’s high-traffic buildings see this after break-in attempts where the keyway was probed with improvised tools.
• Loose cylinder that rotates in the door. The cylinder retaining screw has backed out, or the housing threads are stripped. On Sargent mortise cylinders in commercial doors, the set screw is accessed through a tiny hole that most owners never notice; tightening it wrong can drop the screw into the mechanism.

What you can safely check: confirm the keyway type from the stamp on the key, test whether the issue is the lock or the key by trying a different copy, and inspect the cylinder face for visible damage or looseness. What goes wrong fast: Sargent cylinders use thin steel springs under compression; without a follower tool to hold the plug in place, the spring stack launches across the room and the tiny bottom pins scatter. Reassembling a six-pin Sargent chamber by hand, in a New York apartment with no workbench and a floor that eats small parts, is not a practical Saturday project.
