Schlage Lock Rekeying: The New York Owner’s Guide
Schlage lock rekeying in New York typically runs $29-$49 per cylinder for residential pin kits, with commercial master-key systems starting at $45 per core, and we stock the full Schlage Classic, Everest, and Primus keyways on every van. Most single-family rekeys in Queens or Brooklyn are done same-day; commercial buildings in Manhattan with SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) systems usually book within 24 hours. Homeowners usually discover they need a rekey after closing on a property, after a tenant turnover, or when a key goes missing and they cannot account for every copy.
Which Schlage Models This Applies To
Schlage has manufactured in New York buildings since the 1920s, and the hardware you are likely to encounter falls into three families. The Classic line, including the A-Series, B-Series deadbolts, and F-Series handlesets, uses the original SC1 or SC4 keyway with a standard .115-inch pin diameter. The Everest line, introduced in the early 2000s and common in post-2015 construction from Long Island City to Park Slope, uses a patented undercut keyway (S123 or S145) that requires a different pin kit entirely. The Primus XP high-security cylinders, found in doorman buildings on the Upper East Side and commercial installations near Hudson Yards, add a side-bit milling that no standard pin kit can replicate.
We identify the correct series by keyway stamp (look for “SC1,” “S123,” or the Primus dimple logo on the key bow), cylinder face markings, and in older New York stock, by the presence of a solid brass plug versus the nickel-plated plug Schlage switched to around 2012. OEM Schlage pin kits are what we carry; aftermarket equivalents exist for Classic lines but we do not use them in Everest or Primus work because the tolerances are tight enough that a .001-inch variance will cause a sticky key in humid July weather. The compatibility gotcha we see most often: a building manager orders a Classic rekey for what turns out to be an Everest cylinder, and the key blanks do not even enter the keyway. We check this on-site before quoting.
Signs Your Schlage Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key turns but the bolt does not retract. The tailpiece has separated from the plug, or the cam has worn past its shear line. This is common in pre-war buildings on the Grand Concourse where decades of heavy brass keys have ovalled the cam slot.
- Key requires jiggling or lifting to operate. Worn pin chambers have opened up tolerance beyond .003 inch, meaning the bottom pins no longer align cleanly at the shear line. In coastal Queens, salt air accelerates this by corroding the pin surfaces.
- Different keys open the same lock. This is master-key system failure, not magic. A worn master wafer has cracked or a pin has sheared, creating an accidental cross-keying situation we find in older Manhattan rental stock with heavy turnover.
- Key extraction is difficult or the key sticks at 90 degrees. The plug has developed burrs from repeated keying, or the lubricant has gummed into a paste. We see this in buildings with superintendents who spray WD-40 into cylinders every spring.
- Lock was rekeyed recently and already malfunctions. The prior technician used incorrect pin lengths or mixed brass and steel pins, creating galvanic corrosion. We document this with photos and show the customer what was inside.

DIY or Call Us?
Rekeying a Schlage cylinder is not high-tension work like a garage door spring, but it is precision work that goes wrong predictably. An owner with patience and a $15 pinning kit from a hardware store can rekey a Classic deadbolt if the cylinder is already removed, the plug follower is the correct diameter, and the workspace is well-lit. Where DIY fails: mixing up the top and bottom pin order, launching springs across the room, or discovering the cylinder is master-keyed and now neither the change key nor the master opens the lock.
We do not recommend DIY for Everest or Primus cylinders. The side-bit wafers in Primus require a specialized pinning shoe, and one misaligned wafer will brick a $90 cylinder. For Manhattan and Brooklyn buildings with intercom-integrated locks or fire-department key boxes, a botched rekey can trigger a building-wide rekeying order. In New York’s pre-war buildings with original brass hardware, we see 20-year lifespans; in new construction with nickel-plated plugs, we sometimes see wear at 5 years due to softer metal and tighter tolerances.
