Yale Lock Rekeying: The New York Owner’s Guide

Yale lock rekeying in New York typically runs $45-$85 per cylinder for residential deadbolts and knob sets, with most jobs completed same-day. We stock Yale-compatible pinning kits, key blanks, and cylinders on every truck, and we quote the full price in writing before dispatching a technician. Most New York owners discover they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or a tenant turnover - the lock still turns, but the key control is gone.

Which Yale Models This Applies To

Yale residential hardware in New York falls into three main series, and the rekey approach differs for each. The YH Collection (Yale’s current residential line, including the YH-82 deadbolt and YH-53 entry knob) uses a standard Schlage C-keyway cylinder that we can repin or swap on-site. The older Yale 5400LN and 6400 series commercial levers - common in pre-war apartment buildings from the Upper West Side to Jackson Heights - use Yale’s proprietary keyway and require factory-original blanks or authorized aftermarket equivalents from Ilco or Jet. The Assure Lock smart series (YRD226, YRD256) contains a removable mechanical cylinder override; we rekey that cylinder without touching the electronic components.

To identify your series, check the latch face for a stamped model number or look for the Yale logo on the cylinder housing. The YH Collection carries a small “YH” prefix before the model number. If your lock was installed between 2010 and 2020 and has no visible model stamp, it is likely a YH-82 or YH-53 - we see these in almost every new-construction condo from Long Island City to Downtown Brooklyn. We do not use generic pinning kits on Yale proprietary keyways; the tolerances are too tight and the keys will stick. Novak Lock & Security New York is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Yale.

Signs Your Yale Lock Rekeying Is Failing

Signs Your Yale Lock Rekeying Is Failing
  • Key turns but bolt does not retract fully. The tailpiece connecting the cylinder to the latch mechanism has worn or the cylinder cam is slipping. On Yale YH-82 deadbolts, this often traces to a cracked cam insert - a $12 part that takes ten minutes to replace while the cylinder is already apart for rekeying.
  • Newly cut key binds or requires jiggling. The cylinder pins have developed flat spots or the springs have lost tension. In New York’s humidity cycles, Yale brass pins can corrode slightly enough to drag without seizing entirely.
  • Key works in one direction only. The cylinder plug has shifted axially, usually because the retaining clip on the rear of the cylinder has loosened. We find this on Yale 5400LN levers in high-traffic buildings where the door slams regularly.
  • Previous owner or tenant still has a working key. This is not a mechanical failure but a security gap. Rekeying changes the pin combination so old keys no longer operate the lock - faster and cheaper than full replacement.
  • Locksmith previously rekeyed it, and now the key feels gritty. Someone used incorrect pin diameters or mixed manufacturers’ pins in the same cylinder. Yale cylinders spec .115″ bottom pins and .098″ top pins; deviations of even .003″ cause binding.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Standard Yale residential rekey (1 cylinder) $45-$65 Disassembly, repin to new key, 2 cut keys, reassembly, function test
Yale commercial lever rekey (5400LN/6400 series) $65-$85 Disassembly, proprietary keyway pinning, 2 cut keys, tailpiece inspection, lube
Additional cylinders, same visit $25-$40 each Same pinning, keyed alike or differently per your schedule
Cylinder replacement (if damaged) $85-$140 New Yale-compatible cylinder, pinned to new key, installed, 2 keys

What drives the range: cylinder accessibility (a Yale deadbolt on a standard door takes less time than a 6400 series lever with a tight escutcheon), whether the existing key is available for impressioning, and if the cylinder needs cleaning or minor part replacement. We quote the exact figure on the phone - Haven Standard Clause 1 - and the technician is not permitted to change it at your door. Every rekey carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. You receive a written invoice, a photo record of the completed work, and the old keys back if you want them.

What you can safely check: verify you have a working key, confirm the model number if visible, and test whether the issue is the key or the lock by trying a duplicate. What goes wrong with DIY rekeying: Yale cylinders use small coiled springs under light compression - not dangerous, but easy to launch across a room and lose. The pin stacks must be measured with a caliper, not eyeballed; a pin that is .005″ too long will work in dry weather and fail when the metal swells in August humidity. We have rekeyed over 60,000 locks since 2002, and the ones that come to us in a ziplock bag after a weekend attempt usually cost more to sort out than a clean rekey would have. If you want to try, buy a practice cylinder first. If you want it done once, call (551) 214-0800.
